Wa Dining OKAN is small, unassuming, but powerful, concise. If you find yourself lost in the sea of asian restaurants on convoy or flabbergasted by the long wait times at other places, then you might enjoy Wa Dining, A LOT. So for starters, there's a lot of options here that are simply delicious. Since I'll probably eat here multiple times, I started off with the katsuni which was katsu and egg, which was nothing but incredible. Kisune is next on my list, then everything else. But from what I've had so far, everything is rich in flavor, juicy, and portioned out so well that you leave full but not bloated. I'll keep it short and simple. Good food, good service, good vibes. All without absurd 2 hour waits or overpriced items.

My friend and I were in the mood for some Japanese food and came across this restaurant. They had an extensive lunch menu with bento boxes that ranged from $10 - $16.50. I ordered the Salmon Sashimi bento box for $13.00 that came with 5 pieces of salmon sashimi, miso soup, 3 side dishes, and a salad. The box came with white rice, but there was an option to upgrade to brown rice or salad for 50 cents more, which was what I did to cut back on my carbs intake. The salmon quality was good and fresh. The miso soup was seasoned just right and not salty. I also liked the salad dressing and appreciated the fact that the salad itself was fresh. My friend ordered the Salmon Yaki (salt grilled salmon) for $12.50. It came miso soup, 3 side dishes, and white rice. The fish was nicely flavored, but was extremely dry. The salmon skin was crispy, but the fish itself was way over cooked! We were feeling a bit adventurous and decided to try 2 appetizers that we would normally never even consider. We ordered the Tako wasa (raw octopus with pickled wasabi) for $4.50 and the Ankimo (monk fish liver) for $8.00. I had one little piece of the raw octopus and it was more than enough. It was soaked in pickled wasabi. Sour, crunchy, and slimy is how I would describe it. I was definitely was not interested in a second bite, that's for sure! The Ankimo was a delicacy! If you like foie gras, then you will for sure have an appreciation for this. This monk fish liver is the ocean equivalent of foie gras, and the taste is very similar. For $8 we got 3 thin slices that was served a small dipping sauce bowl. I would return to this restaurant just for the Ankimo! The service was rather slow. My friend and I had a happy hour event that we were hosting and it took forever for us to get our bill. We had to ask twice. We sat outside in a very small patio, but it was a better option than inside the restaurant where it was cramped and hot--no air conditioning! In hind sight, I'm thinking, a sushi restaurant that doesn't have AC?? Hmmmmm.....How do their fish stay fresh?.....

My family and I love a good izakaya so when I saw the reviews for Wa Dining Okan, I knew we had to try it. Came on a Saturday evening for a late walk-in dinner. It was really good, not the best I've ever had, but really solid Japanese food. Just my personal recommendation - don't order the sashimi items, not the best quality for the price. Food: Gobo Salad - great for sharing. Fried, thinly slice gobo chips. This is one of the dishes that makes me feel like I'm in Japan at a yokocho. Great for picking at and great if you're drinking! Takoyaki - classic street style dish. It was good, nothing to go crazy about. Fried baby octopus - Yum! I love octopus in any form and fried is even better. Super tender Fried Soft Shell Crab - small portion, but also super delicious and very flavorful. Chirashi - I don't recommend. I thought this was not worth the price. If you want sashimi grade fish, I would recommend going to an actual sushi restaurant. Scallop ceviche with uni - I did really enjoy this one and thought this was worth it! Sweet scallops with uni in a ponzu sauce Creamy mentaiko udon - So good! highly recommend. Perfect for sharing as it is quite rich. Full of umami flavor. Service/Ambiance/Price: Service was pretty quick once we were seated. The ambiance is super casual and the restaurant is very small. Feels like a hole-in-the-wall style restaruant. Price is super reasonable for good izakaya.

This place looked really busy on a weekday but thankfully we made reservations. Heads up, they allow reservations on Monday to Thursdays. Walk in only on weekends. I think they are understaffed here but it is a small place. But it's very busy. No one in my group was too hungry cause we had a big lunch but we needed to eat something before going to a speakeasy for the night. They have many food options that We got 2-3 items each. They weren't the greatest imo but it did its purpose. The food fed us so we wouldn't have a rough night. There would be people coming in trying to sit and the servers would show them an empty spot at the bar but I think due to lack of service, they always walked out. Lol it got to the 3rd or 4th guy before they actually were offered water and service. I wouldn't order anything I got this time which was tempura shrimp, onigri, and yellowtail sashimi. I would be willing to come here again to try other options on their menu though.

Favorite place to get udon in San Diego! The place is in the corner of the plaza and has limited seating. I wouldn't recommend this place for big parties (6+) unless you're okay with most likely splitting up. My favorite udon is the mentai udon which is a more creamy udon with cod roe and poached egg and I get it with a side of soft shell crab tempura. Their skewers are also really good and our favorite is the beef tongue. Overall the place has really good food, decent portions, and great prices. I think overall my husband and I spent like $60 total +tip
